Below is some basic electrical information which you may find of some use. remember that electricity is dangerous, and never attempt anything you are unsure of. If you need any assistance with you electrical work, contact us, and we'll be only to happy to help

Wiring Plugs

Modern plugs are fused, with flat pins, designed for use in 13A socket outlets on a ring main circuit. (If you still use round pin plugs, it is likely that your wiring is old an may need renewing).

When wiring a plug, it is important to distinguish the three wires, live, neutral and earth. Most appliances will use the 'new' colour wiring detailed below, but some old appliances will still use the old colours listed.

Wire Type

Colour

Old colour

Live Brown Red
Neutral Blue Black
Earth Green and Yellow Green

The Live wire is connected to the terminal marked 'L', which is connected to the fuse.
The Earth wire is connected to the top pin of the plug, marked 'E', or with the earth symbol earth.gif (144 bytes)
The Neutral wire is connected to the terminal marked 'N'

The outer sheath should be cut away by about 50mm (2in) to reveal the three wires inside. All three wires should be cut so that they exactly reach the terminals, and should be stripped to reveal about 6mm (1/4 in) of wire.

Ensure that all terminals are securely tightened.

Which Fuse

Always fit fuses of the correct rating for the job

Never use a larger cartridge fuse, or a thicker wire in a renewable fuse, even as a temporary measure. Don't rely on a blown fuse as a guide, it may have been wrong in the first place

Remember to switch off before changing fuses
